Waiting For Heroes

Opening Villains

When rumors of a game cycling between the names “Blizzard DotA” and “Blizzard All-Stars” were surfacing around 2010-2011, I was just about done with the whole MOBA genre of games. For me, personally, the days of classic DotA All-Stars were more or less over with. The new generation consisting of Heroes of Newerth, League of Legends and Dota 2 was on the rise and I did not intend to spend more time on MOBAs. I just started playing a lot of competitive StarCraft II so there was virtually no time for me to simultaneously juggle school, my social life, a few games, and most importantly, sleep.

However, prior to the growing hype of a standalone Blizzard DotA-like game, I played DotA All-Stars religiously. I never really jumped into professional DotA tournaments or fixed team games since I enjoyed playing with random people every single game. (To be honest, I just liked carrying pubbies). I believed that was a very essential element in making DotA All-Stars, a WarCraft III map made by fans for fans, a fun experience.

Heroes of the Storm NOT to be shown or playable at Dreamhack 2013

Dreamhack Winter 2013, the gamers mecca of Europe which takes place in Sweden, began yesterday – 28th November – and runs through 1st December.

Blizzard will have a decided presence at the convention, with confirmed showings of Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, Warlords of Draenor (the upcoming World of Warcraft expansion) and Reaper of Souls (the upcoming Diablo 3 expansion).

To our surprise, however, there is no announcement or seemingly any plan to show Heroes of the Storm.  This seems a bit odd considering just how polished the game is, and how well it played even in it’s alpha stage on the Blizzcon 2013 show floor.  Particularly because Heroes is poised to go up against MOBA giants like DotA 2, League of Legends, and Heroes of Newerth – which all have major placement at Dreamhack, including structured tournaments.

I can understand that Blizzard doesn’t want to have a tournament for Heroes just yet.  I can also understand that they do not want to release too much information about the game just yet.  But at a convention like Dreamhack, Heroes could easily fire a shot across the bow of the MOBA competition even with the trailer being shown and the alpha being playable that we had access to at Blizzcon.

Hopefully this doesn’t show that the timeline for Heroes of the Storm is longer than we have hoped, and that the game will not reach beta, let alone release, until well into 2014.

We shall see.
